It is not necessarily obvious that xpdf is able to select text. People would even say "yes, that draws a black box, but it doesn't select text". And actually, it is not necessarily easy to select an exact part of the text, because we don't have a feedback of the exact current selection. I think a good way to achieve this would be to rather draw a mere rectangle showing part of the page which is selected, and in addition to that, to reverse-video the corresponding actually selected text.
