Having spent some time debugging this, I discovered that omitting "DefaultDepth 24" from my xorg.conf caused the server to abort with the "no screens found" error message--for both 8.44.3 and 8.43.2. I'll file a separate bug about that.
However, even with that directive in place, I still see a total system freeze when using the 8.44.3 driver. I'm attaching a log file from the 8.44.3 driver with "DefaultDepth 24" added back to the configuration. -- Sam Morris <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
