1) The bug is certainly NOT related to setuid/setguid 2) Reverting to hal-info 20071030-1 (as suggested by Josselin Mouette) did fix the network-manager-gnome-applet. 3) Updating my unstable this morning did fix the gnome-power-manager applet. What is left is the gnome-volume-manager (still not working). I'll try to dig this and submit another issue.
