One possibility: do you have xfonts-{75,100}dpi-transcoded installed?
And if not, could you try installing them to see if that fixes the
problem? If so, it's a known bug for which I have a partial-but-
incomplete fix. Otherwise, I may have to try to get you a debug
version.
