Hmhm, looking at the problem I'd say that yes you should use vncconfig. It seens that it's a tool common to all vnc clients. But it's strange that it doesn't work only since xfce upgrade. (well that was a large upgrade, from 4.2 to 4.4). Did you try from another window manager or desktop environment?
