This looks like a problem in snd-hda-intel, and it wouldn't be the first one. The GNOME stuff (control-center and the applet) often try to do clever things with the volume control, and gets hit hard by driver bugs. You can try to play with the model= option when loading the module. It has fixed a nasty issue with my own HDA card. Cheers, -- .''`. : :' : We are debian.org.
