I have similar problem, but it is the same also with old version 1.3.1.
Without licence file ("~/.rdekstop/licence*") rdesktop cannot
connect to "Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4".
But it is able to connect to "Windows 2000 Server SP4",
after that licence file is created.
With this "licence file" connection to
"Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4" is succesfull.
Could you please try something like:
rm -rf ~/.rdesktop
rdesktop Win2K (fail)
rdesktop WinXP (ok)
rdesktop Win2K (ok)
