I few more details about this situation. I was experimenting with the config file and so frequently would have two (or more) _windows_ up at once. So I'm not sure whether there might be some interaction that happens when multiple mrxvt windows are open. Most of the experimentation revolved about the items in the other two bugs posted by me today on mrxvt.
