do you mean keeping whole tar as a single file under git in some
separate branch like upstream-tar?

even now I can change my workflow to use gbp. Having possibility to
specify alternative location for tarballs is just a matter of
convenience and of making software more flexible so it meets desires
(not needs) of wider range of users. Since you are the author -- it is
your right to don't implement it, but I would be thankful if such option
becomes available. If you prefer me to supply you a patch, I could do
that - just let me know
