I found ALSA stopped working after the kernel upgrade. Any program that tried to work with alsa (like xmms, totem, or gnome sound) stalled. I recompiled the drivers and alsa now appears to be working.

However, although alsa is now working, mplayer still has the same problem (though now it will get a few seconds into the movie and then stall instead of stalling immediately).

mplayer -ao esd has the same problem (plays for a few seconds, then stalls).

I tried playing the file with totem, and, though it begins to play the file correctly, audio cuts out within the first few seconds, though it continues to play the video.

I'm not sure if it's relevant, but I accidently upgraded the kernel with the other aptitude updates, so it's now 2.6.22, but I don't believe it has changed anything (I compiled 2.6.22 from kernel.org when the problem first started, and it did not affect the problem).
