As I wrote in the discussion recently in debian-l10n-english, packages
short descriptions are ot mean to be the advertisement banner for
upstream. They should be precise and factual.
I recommend reading 6.2.1 of the Developer's Reference, particularly
that part:
Be objective. Package descriptions are not the place for
advocating your package, no matter how much you love it. Remember
that the reader may not care about the same things you care about.
6.2.2 also give hints for the package synopsis (short description):
Among other advices, it gives the following: "It should also not begin
with an article, either definite ("the") or indefinite ("a" or "an")."
6.2.3 gives hints for the long description...
Let me quote that one:
* How is this package different from the competition? Is it a
better implementation? more features? different features? Why
should I choose this package.
So, well, while upstream claims that mplayer is "The Movie Player",
the point of your package description is indeed to explain our users
why it is "The" movie player.
