Yes, this lack of flexibility in the sorting system has been reported
several times already in upstream's BTS. See for example [1], [2] or
[3].

There have recently been changes in this respect, allowing a user to
choose among more sorting options, like :
* Genre - Artist
* Genre - Album
* Year - Artist
* Year - Album
Please see [3] for the whole story.
However, as far as I can tell, no mechanism exists yet in exaile
allowing to fully configure the sorting order. So I am afraid that you
will have to wait a bit longer to see this new feature implemented.
