Oh, no wonder.  The main problem with the man page is

       split

       Split the current region into two new ones. All regions on the  display
       are  resized  to make room for the new region. The blank window is dis-
       played on the new region. Use the "remove" or  the  "only"  command  to
       delete regions.


doesn't mention that one can use C-a <tab> to move to the other
region, and then e.g., C-a c to start a shell there. Etc.

(Indeed, one wonders why a shell isn't started there upon birth.)
