Firstly thanks for the bug report. I've fixed this in CVS now, and users may specify 'disk_device=/dev/xvd[a-z]' in xen-tools.conf to use whatever name they like.
However I must suggest I find the severity of the bug report a little higher than I'd expect - given that there is not yet a released version of Xen in the debian archive which uses this scheme, and given that the fix is so trivial to make upon a per-domain basis. Anyway, expect an upload in the next week which will close this.
