Debian's mdadm currently does not really support non-standard array names, like /dev/md/[^0-9]*. The reason is mostly because upstream's way of handling them is unnecessarily complex, counter-intuitive and even illogical. Thus, I wanted to first work with upstream to clean up the mess a bit. And I can't find time for it. If you would like to work on adding support for v1-named arrays (/dev/md/arrayname), then please go ahead. I'd love several small, non-intrusive patches and it would be even better, if you could resolve this with upstream. I'll thus mark this wontfix help now.
