To whom it may concern, Maxima looks for its index, maxima-index.lisp, and the text of its online documentation (Texinfo output) in the directory *MAXIMA-INFODIR* or a subdirectory of that. So by fudging *MAXIMA-INFODIR* and at least one other thing (namely the AUTOLOAD property of a function defined in maxima-index.lisp) it should be possible to convince Maxima to fetch its online documentation from another location. I can work with someone to resolve this bug, if anyone is still interested.
