So maybe you actually used a character that is undefined in the named
encoding?

It seems to be another problem, because also a completely empty message gets rejected.
2. Hmmm ... you have the locales package installed? maybe try to
reconfigure it:
dpkg-reconfigure locales
It is installed and set to en_US.UTF-8 as default

Is there any specific locale I have to install or run thunderbird under?
