It seems this is not the problem; I was able to start lighttpd with the
following setting on a host using gamin:
server.stat-cache-engine = "fam"
So the problem is somewhere else, perhaps gamin is not properly
running?

Carsten: it would be interesting to know whether this helped, or
whether you were able to gather more data on the problem? Perhaps you
can turn on a higher level of debug messages or "strace" lighthttpd?
