I tried to use unison with --socket, having it listen on a TCP port, as I hoped I've made clear in the initial post. So in this case unison does handle the networking by itself. I have a VPN, so I thought there's no need to use SSH, however later I abandoned the unison --socket plans because of lack of authentication. Roman.
