I assume you used an official image for Etch?
No, I used the Debian testing (Lenny) netinst amd64 image. The name of
the file I downloaded was
              debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso
I will download a new daily build image now to see if it fixes the problem.

Although this is unlikely to be an installer problem, we can try to narrow
it down somewhat before reassigning the issue.

There are two options:
- the kernel driver is just plain broken; in that case an update to a
  more recent kernel may fix the issue
- the driver needs additional firmware, which currently is just not
  supported in the installer

If I google for your NIC, it seems likely that the first option is the
correct one as there are also reports of problems for other
distributions. Could you try a daily built image [1] (will install Lenny)
to see if the network works with that?

Please also provide the output of "lspci -nn'.
