The text "User unknown" does not appear anywhere in Exim's source code. If any Exim installation is emitting it, it is because the configuration
file has used that text.

Ours does not use that text.

However, I believe there are (or were) other MUAs/MTAs that overwrite
whatever message comes with a 550 error, replacing it with "User
unknown". There were certainly cases of this in the past.

That looks like a case of this.
