tags 425851 wontfix thanks This issue has been diagnosed [1] as a bug in the emulator and has been fixed in version 6 of VMWare Workstation.
A patch for the kernel is available [2], but is unlikely to be accepted upstream and thus also not applied in Debian. You can of course apply the patch locally in a custom kernel. Alternatively, you can use the emulated IDE controller instead of the SCSI one. Tagging the BR wontfix instead of closing so it remains available as a reference for others.
