This problem has been fixed.
The problem was that

this open triggered cowdancer to load ilist file (using file descriptor
0)
'screen' ./configure script assumed that close(0); open() will give
file descriptor 0, but file descriptor 0 was already taken by
cowdancer. The current solution is to initialize cowdancer at an
earlier stage as to use file descriptor 3.
