First of all try whether a login through telnet works:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ telnet localhost imap
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to turtle.linuxia.ch.
Escape character is '^]'.
* OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 UIDPLUS CHILDREN NAMESPACE
THREAD=ORDEREDSUBJECT THREAD=REFERENCES SORT QUOTA IDLE ACL ACL2=UNION
STARTTLS] Courier-IMAP ready. Copyright 1998-2005 Double Precision, Inc.
  See COPYING for distribution information.
a login [EMAIL PROTECTED] mysecret
a OK LOGIN Ok.
b logout
* BYE Courier-IMAP server shutting down
b OK LOGOUT completed

If that also fails, enable DEBUG_LOGIN in authdaemonrc and restart
courier-authdaemon.

Just restarting courier-authdaemon seems to have done the trick.
So now I wonder if the upgrades of this morning caused it to stop
working and if so, which package.

What kind of authentication do you use ?
