Hello Thomas and all, It seems this is not a new problem; it's because evms_activate (perhaps called by evmsn, or perhaps some other tool is also affected, too) somehow relies on libgcc_s.so.1, but it isn't copied into the initrd. If you munge one of the usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/ scripts to do so, it works much better...
