Looking at the most recent bug log at http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.cgi?&pkg=r-base&ver=2.5.1%7E20070513-1&arch=hppa&stamp=1179186013&file=log I see config.status: creating src/scripts/INSTALL sed: error while loading shared libraries: internal error: symidx out of range of fptr table so it may be because sed died. Do you have access to hppa? Could you try building R a binary NMU? Do you know of any recent sed or other snafus?
