First of all, I do not know OCAML :-) I only can read/patch it...
Secondary, I think it is a good idea to separate user configuration
parameters from the internal variables.
However, I think backward compatibility is not necessary. It is better to
write a simple sed script in postinst which can "fix" conffile from the
previous versions. I can help with writing proper postinst script if
necessary.
