since php5 were successfully build on all debian archs (attempted), I guess problem could lie in the fact you are not using original debian .orig.tar.gz and patch: php5_5.2.2-1~highlightbg.diff.gz Could you double check if this error is present in .orig.tar.gz/diff.gz from debian archives?
