This bug was the only trouble I had with my otherwise perfect etch installation, and I have already explained the workaround to numerous people with the same problem.
A user who has installed icedove-gnome-support clearly shows that he wants to use icedove inside gnome. Then he goes to Desktop/Preferences/Preffered Applications, selects iceweasel as his default browser but icedove still opens epiphany. This is counter-intuitive and you can't expect the user to run dpkg-reconfigure or update-alternatives.
