I understand your objective here, but mounting anything under /var
read-only is generally asking for trouble.

I'm a bit nervous about making it so that under some circumstances, the
autogenerated conf isn't updated; this could introduce surprising
behavior.

Another solution has come to mind: move the autogenerated file to
/var/cache/aide. It would solve your case, and I suspect that it's
a more appropriate place anyway.
