I've just tried downgrading xfce4-appfinder to 4.3.99.2 which is the version in unstable/testing/stable, and I can't reproduce, it runs fine. So the bug is lying elsewhere, in some lib. I'll try to prepare some backports of xfce4-appfinder 4.4 for Etch and will let you know how to get it and test.
