It just exits; no messages, nothing.
Could you please install strace and provide us with a ``strace xitalk'' just for the logs?
I encountered similar problems when trying to package the actual upstream version from the web. I will file a bug against ftp.debian.org voting for the removal of xitalk ASAP, but I would need some further evidence.
Thank you for reporting issue directly to the BTS, I thought it was a local problem on my machine with the new revision and deferred this issue.
