The file permissions on /var/lib/ldap are OK. It seems to be a problem
with the database, perhaps it has been damaged during the update.

Well, again I have no explanation for how this particular package upgrade
would touch the LDAP database.  It's possible there's a bug in slapd that
can result in database corruption, but I don't see that it would be related
to the upgrade.

Ok, I have two more servers with the same configuration. I will upgrade them and check whether the same problem occurs.
