Package: gdm
Version: 2.16.4-1
Severity: normal

When I set gdm to use the traditional greeter window instead of a theme,
*almost* always, after I finish my session and return to gdm, I get the
infamous (and partly hidden) message "Authentication failed. Letters
must be ...", *without typing anything*. That is, it displays that
error message all by itself atfer 1 or 2 seconds. Meanwhile I can see
this line being spit out to /var/log/auth.log:

Feb 27 00:32:58 unicorn gdm[3369]: (pam_unix) bad username []

This happens with user pics or without them, on 2 very different
systems, I think it should be reproducible. It goes away when I use
themed gdm (but that is intolerably slow for me).
