Package: zd1211-firmware Version: 2.4.0.0-1 Severity: serious This package is out of date and does not support all hardware (#363271), and does not install the firmware with the names that the zd1211rw driver expects (#383604).
Upstream is actively discouraging users from using this package: http://zd1211.ath.cx/wiki/DriverRewrite#Firmware * Debian users beware: don't use the the zd1211-firmware package, as this is for Debian's fork of the vendor-based driver (Ok, "Debian's fork" is a little bit strong, but when upstream has to give this kind of caution, we're doing something wrong..) These issues combine to make this package less than suitable for release with etch. In its current state, etch users will have a bear of a time getting their zd1211 to work. When they insert it the in-kernel module will automatically load, and fail to work, since it can't find firmware. The only option a user who wants to stick with the software provided in debian will have is to build the zd1211-source package, and convince udev to load its module instead of zd1211. And that's assuming that their hardware is supported by that version of the driver; the in-tree kernel driver probably supports more hardware. Realistically, users will be better served downloading firmware from the above url. This can easiy be fixed by fixing updating the package.. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-4-686 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages zd1211-firmware depends on: ii udev 0.103-2 /dev/ and hotplug management daemo Versions of packages zd1211-firmware recommends: pn zd1211-module <none> (no description available) -- no debconf information -- see shy jo
