The problem is that:
A login-menu of gdm is shown in English, not in Japanese.

I expect it should be shown in Japanese
as long as ja_JP is set in gnome-session, like this:

$ echo $LANG
ja_JP.UTF-8
says ja_JP.UTF-8 is used in my gnome-session.
As for the contents of the /etc/locale.gen file,
$ cat /etc/locale.gen
ja_JP.EUC-JP EUC-JP

en_US ISO-8859-1
en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8
ja_JP.UTF-8 UTF-8

The same problem does not happen in Debian 3.1 (sarge).
