Thanks to Christian for the advice I will give it a try.
I usually try to stick to .debs to allow security and other updates to keep
me uptodate.
In Reply to Stephen's suggestion I include his request below, incase it proves
useful..... Thanks all. Paul ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

*** ANCIENT VERSION DETECTED! ***
Sorry, this program is too ancient to run without
an explicit user action: If it's not possible to upgrade
you may edit the file
/home/debian64/.gtk-gnutella/config_gnet
and set the variable "ancient_version_force" to
"gtk-gnutella/0.96.2u (2006-09-23; r0; GTK2; Linux x86_64)".
You will then be able to run this version forever, but
please consider upgrading, as Gnutella is an evolving
network in which ancient software is less useful or even
harmful!

relate to my etc/hosts file ( automatically generated) which is;
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost debian64
# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts
Which I believe is OK but I'm unsure of the line
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
