As bzip2 is block-oriented, it should be relatively easy to make it
multi-threaded, so that it can benefit from a multi-core setup.

Niels Werensteijn <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> already did that
(for the compression stage only) in 2003, maybe you could just take over
his multi-thread modifications, if he agrees, and (if a significant gain
can be expected) make the decompression stage multi-threaded, too.
