$ ls -al /usr/X11R6/lib/libXfont.so.1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Jun 1 2004 /usr/X11R6/lib/libXfont.so.1 -> libXfont.so.1.5 $ dpkg -S /usr/X11R6/lib/libXfont.so.1.5 dpkg: /usr/X11R6/lib/libXfont.so.1.5 not found. Looks like a non-deb installation, though I can't remember when or why I might have done that. Removing it resolves the issue, so it was my fault. Sorry for the noise.
