In this case it was an hal policy problem (shortly mentioned in the README). The discussion here: http://www.nabble.com/suspend-not-working-t2544954.html helped to resolve the problem. The policy setted for the org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement is repeated in various files (/etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf,gnome-power-manager} and it's not clear which is the actual policy used by hald/gnome-power-manager (since it's not clear which is the order they're read). A pointer to the scripts in /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-* would be very nice, as well as a short explanation regarding the difference meant between hibernation (suspension to disk) and suspension (suspension to ram). It's not either clear why there are two different directories ( /usr/lib/hal/scripts/ and /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux) with apparently identical scripts (but it seems, at least in my case, that the first directory has priority).
