I've tried to rebuild the package, and it did not change anything. I'm testing this now, and see that the interfaces are still up after halt -i is executed. No idea why yet. I wonder whether the sysvinit tools distributed with debian etch were compiled not for the lowest common processor, but expecting more advanced processors than PII or PIII or early PIV's.
