Do you have any extensions installed? Try to start
# icedove -safe-mode
if that helps, try to figure out which extension causes the troubles.

please attach the gzipped 'strace -f' log.
Further, please install icedove-dbg and start icedove from
command-line, like:
# icedove -g
..
(gdb) run
...
as soon as thunderbird crashes there should some gdb output about the
crash, please do a
(gdb) bt full
for now and attach the info printed.
