I have discussed this issue with my sponsor in the past, and we have agreed that the proper split is not worth the hassle at the moment. There are no packages apart from gpsd itself depending on the library, and the SONAME has changed regularly and will probably change again soon. As soon as a package linking to libgps enters the archive, I will make the split and coordinate with the respective maintainers. Cheers, Til
