Thanks for the try, but that link was just fine. I then got a little progress
by adding a tslib/ directory under typo3_src-4.0, but alas, just a little
progress....

Instead of the "Cannot find tslib/" brick wall, after this my two typo3
instances (with separate /var/www/typo3-... and /etc/typo3-.... and
/etc/apache2/sites-available/typo3-.... directories, and their own mysql
databases different from the typo3-dummy database) both started finding my old
typo3-dummy database, which site wasn't even enabled in
/etc/apache2/sites-enabled!!

It seemed quite a mess, so I purged typo3/typo3_src-4.0/typo3-dummy and
re-installed. Another small step forward....

Now at least one instance, http://www.ckintl.biz/ frontend seems to display
correctly, but http://www.ckintl.biz/typo3/typo3/ is clearly not finding the
right localconf.php, as it gives me:

"The current username, password or host was not accepted when the connection to
the database was attempted to be established! Database Error"

This just worked!! I haven't touched either localconf.php or the mysql
database, and the links pointing at the correct localconf.php in
/var/www/typo3-ckintl all seem fine!!

Is this new version of typo3 looking for localconf.php in some new place?

This all very confusing and frustating because I only spent a week last month
getting all this working just right, and now I am blown out of the water by
some weird and subtle thing happening in the guts of typo3 after a software
update.
