It is of course a problem specific to my box, and not an aptitude bug.
It seems my problem was a libstdc++.so.5 libstdc++.so.6 problem
My linking was all messed up for libsigc-2.0.so.0
Rather that linking in /usr/lib/libsigc-2.0.so.0 it was grabbing a version
form someplace else, thus causing aptitude to link in both libstdc++.so.5
and libstdc++.so.6 , and I gather that is is a bad thing.
It makes me wonder how many other problems I was having, but just didn't
see!
after making adjustments in /etc/ld.so.conf and running ldconfig things
run fine.
