I don't see why a simple change in build process would be a diverging. Adapting a program to a debian Does not mean copying the build process "as is" but making it "Debian". The goal to keep it purely same as upstream does not serve the Debian community, who atre the end users. A better quality is achieved if packages are more unifor each other. In this case I feel, that the it is unnecessary burder for new users to have to consult package in order to find proper name to call the binary.
