I'm thinking about the "doesn't start up after upgrade" problem. Please be specific about which versions you run when you report success or failure.
The NetworkManager error message is not much to worry about. It only tells you it won't use NetworkManager. I put a notice in README.Debian about this to calm people down a bit. Cheers, Øystein Gisnås
