Did this only start happening after upgrading to 4.3.10-8 from 4.3.10-2?... If so, it may be that the session file handler isn't entirely thread-savvy. If that is the case, it will be fixed with the next upload which, unfortunately, is disabling thread safety again.

Aparently yes, this started to happen after said upgrade. I can't tell for sure, though. I tried building php 4.3.10-8 packages with thread-safety disabled but there was a problem with something: our mambo installation went 'under maintaince' when I installed them.
I believe it might be some module package which will also need a rebuild -- I did this for php4-pgsql but did not check others. Will be waiting for your packages to try out here.
