Removing symlinks by update-rc.d might be simple, but it's not
convinient. The symlinks will be re-created with the next package update
and user will need to remove them again.

The /etc/default approach is, on the other hand, complies better with
the Debian Policy [1] and since the files in /etc/default are conffiles
it is also more convinient to place the configuration optins like wether
start as system wide or not must be specified there. This way the user's
options will be protected on upgrades.
