I don't have other laptops with i945 graphics.
But disabling this in /etc/hibernate/ram.conf helped:

After unsetting these, my laptop goes to sleep and wakes up fine, so why
should it be not a "genuine problem with vbetool"?
Note that uswsusp builds a compatibility database, which afaik includes
which laptops need vbetool. Thats why I suggested hibernate should do
the same, instead of making vbetool the default.
